Marco Cunha: A Season Worth Recognizing

There are certain players who make a coach's job easier, not simply because of their talent, but because of their attitude, competitiveness and willingness to do whatever the team needs. Marco Cunha is one of those players.
Marco, a member of the Vaughan Vikings HPP (2011) team, was recently named both the Vaughan Rep Player of the Year and the York Simcoe Baseball Association Player of the Year for the 2026 season. Having had the opportunity to coach Marco, I can tell you that both awards are incredibly well deserved.
I've been around some outstanding hitters throughout my coaching career, and I genuinely believe Marco belongs among the top five hitters in his age group in Ontario. That's not a statement I make lightly, but his performance throughout the 2026 season speaks for itself.
The Numbers Speak for Themselves
Marco finished the summer with an outstanding .466 batting average, .567 on-base percentage, .583 slugging percentage and 1.150 OPS. In 208 plate appearances, he collected 76 hits, including 16 doubles and a home run, while driving in 67 runs and scoring 52. He also drew 36 walks compared to just 19 strikeouts, demonstrating an impressive combination of offensive production and plate discipline.
Now consider the circumstances.
Marco accomplished all of this using a wood bat while competing in one of the most competitive youth baseball leagues in the country.
Anyone familiar with hitting understands how impressive those numbers are. Wood bats are far less forgiving than aluminum, requiring hitters to consistently find the barrel and demonstrate quality swing mechanics. Producing at that level over an entire season is not something that happens by accident.
But what separates Marco from many other talented hitters is his competitiveness. He doesn't shy away from difficult situations. In fact, those are the moments he wants to be part of.
More Than Just a Hitter
While his offensive statistics certainly deserve attention, Marco's overall contributions to our team went well beyond what he accomplished at the plate.
Defensively, he was outstanding at first base. His ability to handle the position, make difficult plays and provide a dependable presence in the infield was an important part of our team's success.
He also made significant contributions on the mound, pitching 57 innings with a 2.46 ERA, allowing just 20 earned runs while holding opposing hitters to a .249 batting average.
It's easy to recognize a player who puts up impressive offensive numbers. It's another thing to recognize someone who consistently contributes in multiple areas of the game.
Marco did both.
What Coaches Look For
As impressive as Marco's baseball ability is, what I appreciate most about him is the person and teammate he is.
He understands that baseball is bigger than individual accomplishments. Despite his success, he remains committed to the team and the people around him. He brings the kind of attitude and competitiveness that every coach wants in their dugout.
He is a tough kid and very competitive, mentally strong and isn't afraid of the difficult moments that come with playing this game. Some players hope the pressure doesn't find them. Marco wants the ball, the at-bat and the opportunity to make a difference.
That mentality is something you can't simply measure with statistics.
Recognition That Is Well Deserved
Being named Player of the Year by one organization is an accomplishment. Receiving that recognition from both Vaughan and the York Simcoe Baseball Association says a great deal about the season Marco put together.
But I hope he understands that these awards aren't the finish line. They're recognition of the work he's already put in and an indication of what he's capable of accomplishing moving forward.
There is still plenty of development ahead, and that's what makes his future exciting.
I've always believed that the best players aren't necessarily the ones with the most talent. They're the ones who combine their ability with the competitiveness, character and desire to continually improve.
Marco has demonstrated those qualities, and I'm proud to have had the opportunity to watch his growth.
Congratulations, Marco, on an outstanding 2026 season and two well-deserved Player of the Year awards. Keep working, keep competing and never lose that desire to be the player your teammates can count on when the game is on the line.
