The swing is one of the most intricate and fascinating movements in all of sports and every fall, hitters from across the city gather at Coach Q’s Elite Hitting Camp to study, refine and elevate that movement. Now entering its 12th year, this camp has become one of the GTA’s most trusted programs for teaching the science behind elite hitting.
Setting the Foundation
Week 1 marked the official start of our 2025 camp and it was all about introduction, evaluation and discovery. Players were introduced to the key philosophies that will shape their training over the next ten weeks:
Understanding the Absolutes of a Stance and Swing — building posture, rhythm and balance before adding complexity.
Developing Awareness — learning how body movement, timing and torque contribute to bat speed and consistency.
Establishing Baselines — testing strength, explosiveness and swing metrics to measure progress accurately.
These first sessions are critical. They allow me to really see how each player moves, thinks and responds to feedback. It sets the tone for everything that follows and ensures that every athlete begins their journey with clarity, purpose and a measurable plan for improvement.
The Evaluation Phase
Our opening week also included a full round of testing and evaluation. Every participant completed an exit velocity consistency assessment, giving us a clear picture of how efficiently they produce repeatable contact. Using radar tracking and data recording, players got a firsthand look at their average exit velocity, maximum velocity and consistency gap — three key indicators of both power and control.
We also measured strength and explosiveness through med ball rotational throws and functional movement tests. These help identify how well athletes generate and transfer force, a vital component in developing real power at the plate.
For me, these numbers are more than just stats — they’re a starting point. They tell the story of where each player is now and how we can best help them get to where they want to be.
Personalized Video Analysis
One of the biggest takeaways from Week 1 was the individual video analysis. Every player received a personalized breakdown of their swing, highlighting sequencing, movement patterns and specific areas for improvement.
It’s one thing to feel your swing, but another to see it. These videos bridge that gap, allowing hitters to visualize their movements and understand the connection between what they’re trying to do and what’s actually happening.
By the end of the first week, each player left with a deeper understanding of their swing and a clear plan for development. They now have their baseline, the data, visuals and feedback that will guide their growth throughout this 10-week journey.
Looking Ahead
The energy in the cage is already high, and the work ethic from this group has been outstanding. The journey has officially begun and I’m excited to see how each player progresses in the weeks ahead.
