Every once in a while, you meet a young athlete who changes the way you see the game. Someone whose presence reminds you why we coach, why we teach, why we pour our hearts into helping kids grow. For me, that person is a special young girl named Delfina — a competitor, a dreamer, and one of the most inspiring young athletes I’ve ever had the privilege to work with.
I’ve spent time teaching both Delfina and her brother Matthew, through baseball lessons, watching them learn, laugh, compete and push themselves with the kind of courage that can’t be coached. I’ve also grown close with their family. Her father, Peter, has always been incredibly supportive and involved and both parents have made it a joy to work with their children.
When you understand Delfina’s story, her determination on the field becomes even more remarkable. Born with a life-threatening liver condition, she faced challenges early in life that most people could never imagine. A transplant saved her life, but it’s her own spirit that has shaped the way she lives it.
Today, aside from the scar she proudly carries from her surgery, Delfina is a vibrant, athletic, joyful child who plays competitive soccer and baseball. She holds her own on a boys’ baseball team, moving between four different positions, though pitching is her favorite. Watching her on the mound, you’d never guess she has faced anything other than the regular ups and downs of being a young athlete. She has a quiet focus, a calm confidence and a natural ability to lead.
A moment that will stay with her forever came through Make-A-Wish Canada, when she met George Springer during a special holiday campaign event. The second Springer walked into the room, the world seemed to stop for her. For a girl who has shown incredible bravery throughout her life, it was beautiful to see her filled with that childlike awe, the kind that makes baseball magical.
As her baseball instructor, watching Delfina grow has been an absolute gift. Seeing her step into each lesson with enthusiasm, watching her brother match her competitiveness and getting to know their wonderful parents has made this relationship incredibly meaningful. Their family embodies gratitude, kindness, and the kind of support that allows kids to flourish.
Delfina is more than a talented young athlete. She is a fighter. A leader. A reminder of what true resilience looks like. And I’m grateful that baseball — this beautiful, humbling game — helped bring all of us together.
She is a champion in every sense of the word, and her story is just beginning.
